Around 2000 people flocked to the event at the Melbourne Convention Centre on 10 and 11 February and several hundred stopped at our stall to ask for advice on a range of topics, including about home care services, Allied Health, respite care and the financial ins and outs of residential aged care and independent living units.
Our team handed out over 1000 gift bags containing information about our services.
Director of Home Care North West Metro and Barwon Sherry-Ann Bailey says between 10 to 15 Uniting AgeWell staff were on hand each day to assist with inquiries.
“About a dozen or so visitors were so impressed by the services we offer they asked how to switch aged care providers to join us,” Sherry-Ann says. “Others who receive home care services through us wanted to find out more information for friends. I’m confident we’ll get a lot of follow-up calls.”
Sherry-Ann says there were also inquiries about careers and we booked in three people for job interviews!
The mini-exercise sessions run on the stage on both days by Exercise Physiologist Cass Lester and Allied Health Assistant Emelia Johnston were very well received, with visitors not only participating but coming to our stand afterwards to see how they could join up to continue the good work!
Both Cass and Emelia also spoke on stage about what types of workouts are best for cardiovascular and bone health, muscle retention, falls prevention and overall wellness.
One of the highlights of the weekend was a visit by Victorian Government Minister for Ageing Ingrid Stitt, who met our team at our stand.
Visitors also enjoyed using the reality goggles to go on virtual tours and were fascinated to learn this is one of the ways of bringing joy to those with cognitive challenges like dementia. There was also uptake on the physical assessment tests done on the spot.
All in all, Team Purple was front and centre at the expo – and we certainly made a difference in helping older people be informed about what services and choices we offer.
